Homeless……..part 3
January 16, 2017

arched-window-overlooking-stairway

Since I couldn’t afford rent and utilities, I gathered up the few possessions I had and moved them into the basement office of Beans and Barley. I was homeless. I didn’t want to admit failure to my family or friends, so I said nothing about my move.

Thankfully, the restaurant had some resources I could use. The staff room was equipped with a washer and dryer (we did our own linens) and a shower. As for storing my clothes and belongings, I came up with an inventive plan to keep them out of sight. Underneath the front stairway which led to the public restrooms, there was an access panel for the underbelly of the stairs.

The front part of the restaurant was heated by hot water radiators which were part of the main building boiler system. During construction it was determined that there wasn’t enough flow to the radiators to provide heat in our area, so a booster pump was installed to push the hot water through our system. The pump and its manual switch were located underneath the front stairway. The pump had to be turned on every winter. This area would be my new closet. I placed clothes hooks on each of the stairs and hung my clothes there. My sleeping bag and pillow fit nicely also. Each night, after the staff had left, ( I would leave with them and walk around the block and then come back), I unscrewed the panel, took my sleeping bag and pillow, set it on the floor of the office and went to sleep. In the morning, I would put everything back and re-screw the panel back in place. The staff always wondered how I beat them to work every day.

I lived like this for a couple of years. The good part was that I learned lots. Eighteen hour days became the norm and I put my heart and soul into the place. There were still bad periods before things began to turn around. Creditors called at all hours and it was difficult to do cooking when the phone never stopped ringing. One day it was so bad, I called the phone company and had the phone removed, (phones weren’t un-pluggable at this time) and a pay phone put in, which had an unlisted number. Finally, some peace! I could still call out when necessary, but I stopped being harassed.

Strangely enough, this action helped the business. It alluded to customers that we didn’t need a phone for business. It made us more popular. This, plus the fact that the food and service was immensely improved put the restaurant on the road to recovery.

By the way, I paid off the loan before it’s due date and never missed a payment.

So, I got the loan and I was happy for the moment. Moments pass. Reality set in. By the time I had paid for the contractors to make the place into a restaurant, there was the other incidentals: equipment, food to start up, money for wages, taxes and overhead.

By the end of construction, I had managed to pay for everything except the food which I needed to open. I ordered the food and wrote the checks with absolutely no money in the bank. The bank manager calls me and asks me to come down to discuss the situation. I appear and he tells me he is going to bounce the checks which I had written for the food and supplies. So I said (with my back against the wall) “Go ahead, but all the money that’s invested will be lost”. I had no choice. Pay them or I won’t open, and there will be nothing to recover.” He paid the checks. I was left with an overdraft.

First business was brisk and it covered the checks that I had written. It was new and everyone had heard about the place through word of mouth. Everyone came to try it out.

Well, aren’t they sorry now. Inconsistency, badly cooked food from people who should have known better and canned beans. Business dropped off faster than the recession killed jobs.

After I fired all the cooks and took over, there was not much choice. The few people that visited the premises were new and hadn’t heard of the happenings. I was down to one server and myself. And she turned out to be an alcoholic that stole booze from the storage cabinets in the basement. Not pleasant as she tried to keep on her feet, serving customers. Duh!

Frustrated, I terminated her, hired a new person who cared and we had two to go forward with enthusiasm. At this time I was living above the restaurant in a single apartment for $110./month. No furniture, just a sleeping bag, a lamp, a few pans to cook food with, and a pillow. My meals were consistent. Pan fried potatoes and two fried eggs. It’s still one of my favorite meals when I’m feeling out of sorts. The income from the restaurant was not enough to sustain this. So I gave it up and came to the conclusion, I only had one resort.

A Rock
December 3, 2016

aaaaaaaaarock-camera-2

A rock is obtuse. It lacks the ability to discern insight, therefore it is solid in its makeup. It blends in with its surroundings, but in reality it is just ‘there’. It gives nothing. But, it takes something.

It takes space and the ability to absorb energy. Energy it absorbs is never given back in equal amounts of what is taken. On the contrary, it takes and takes and takes. Weather it is sunlight, air, or any energy, it sucks it from it’s source.

The purpose behind a rock is to reassure humanity that there is stability. An anchor for its inequality. A rock is a rock is a rock.

If you meditate on ‘rock’ you will find a deep, deep sense of solidness and anchoring. It will scare you with its depth.

How then does a human turn into a ‘rock’?

Probably, lack of love.

Give and take.

On both sides.

Sad.

clarity

Pre-election jitters induced angst and anxiety. Post election results produced anger with one half of America’s population and joy with the other half. It’s hard to reconcile all of these emotions with so many people involved.

The ones in anger feel robbed. They feel loss and they are hurt deeply. Loss is never a good feeling and feeling pain along with the loss tends to breed more anger, hate and prejudice. Possibly the three emotions they were initially trying to remove from the election rhetoric.

In moments like this, clarity is needed. And, unless you’ve experienced and felt an elevated form of clarity throughout your life it may not seem like the solution. Clarity is learned from personal experiences. It’s a feeling which lets you know: ‘you can’t be robbed’. Nothing can be taken from you that you’ve learned, that you instinctively know within or what you won’t relinquish.

The pain must be worked through with love and understanding.

Time will take care of the rest.

ACACIUS

(To ALL)

NICE JOB LADIES, NICE JOB! I SEE YOU BOTH HAVE ANOTHER SONG YOU’RE GOING TO SING. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THIS ONE IS CALLED: INVISIBLE HIGH HEELS. I GUESS THAT EXPLAINS WHY YOU’RE TAKING YOUR HIGH HEELS OFF.

(CHANGE and THE UNKNOWN remove their high heels and hold them in their hands. THEY commit to a cheeky sultry song and dance routine using the piano and bar stools. THE TRIUMVIRATE become the backup dancers and do stylized light tap during the chorus. Music Video 7 begins and depicts scenes from the song)

CHANGE AND THE UNKNOWN

INVISIBLE HIGH HEELS

(Hiding their high heels behind their backs and standing on tip toe as if their shoes were on)

HAVE NO TRAINING WHEELS

(Showing their high heels with no training wheels)

THEY’RE SO WONDERFUL TO WEAR

(Putting their shoes back on)

YOU’LL FEEL LIKE

YOU’RE WALKING ON AIR

(Air shoots up from the floor)

BUT BEWARE

THE UNKNOWN IS A DARE

WHERE LIFE IS LAID BARE

WITH A KEY FOR TOMORROW

WE’RE UNABLE TO BORROW

OOOH, OOOH, OOOH

(With a sexy curtsy)

WE’RE UNABLE TO BORROW

CHANGE

WE’RE YOUNG AND FULL OF ENERGY

IN A HOSTILE WORLD OF SYNERGY

CONSTANT CHANGE CREATES

UNAWARENESS AND EXCHANGE

LEARNING BECOMES AN EXPERIENCE

THAT ALLOWS YOUTHS DISAPPEARANCE

AND LIFE AROUND YOU

MORPHS INTO PERSEVERANCE

FALLING IN LOVE HIDES AND CONCEALS

THE UNKNOWN AND ALL ITS ORDEALS

LIMITATIONS AND KNOWLEDGE
(Enter the bar with everyone giving them strange looks. THEY are dressed in costumes from a costume party THEY had just left. LIMITATIONS is dressed as a giant bee carrying a see through screen in a window frame. KNOWLEDGE is dressed as a leather bound book)

ACACIUS
(Looking up and seeing LIMITATIONS and KNOWLEDGE come into the bar)
WELL, WELL, WELL, A BEE AND A LEATHER BOUND BOOK WALK INTO A BAR

(Customers begin to laugh, but welcome them as THEY move toward ACACIUS with a CD he can play for their karaoke number. THEY hand the CD to ACACIUS)

THANKS FELLAS. WHAT’S WITH YOUR COSTUMES?

KNOWLEDGE
(Speaking into ACACIUS’ microphone)
OUR FRIEND HAS AN ANNUAL COSTUME PARTY WHERE YOU HAVE TO DRESS UP AS SOMETHING PERTAINING TO A LIFE EXPERIENCE. WE CHOSE KNOWLEDGE AND LIMITATIONS. THE TITLE OF THE SONG WE’RE GOING TO SING IS CALLED; PAIN IN THE GLASS.
(EVERYONE laughs)

ACACIUS
(Laughing)
OKAY BOYS. I’VE GOT YOUR CD IN, THERE’S THE STAGE, DO YOUR THING.

KNOWLEDGE AND LIMITATIONS
(Move on stage and position themselves. THE TRIUMVIRATE move in closer to the stage area with tenseness. LIMITATIONS begins a frantic dance back and forth behind the see through screen trying to get through the invisible barrier. Music Video 10 begins and is Flight of the Bumble Bee played intermittently each time LIMITATIONS tries to break through the barrier, with the music from Pain In The Glass)

LIMITATIONS
(Looking through the see through screen to see KNOWLEDGE on the other side)
EACH DAY I APPROACH THIS WINDOW PANE
LOOKING OUT FEELING PAIN FROM DRAIN
MY HOPES AND WISHES, DREAMS AND MORE
CONFRONT A BARRIER I CAN’T IGNORE
MY INTUITION I ADORE
IT’S LIFE IN FULL COLOR
THIS PANE OF GLASS
IN BLACK AND WHITE
STOPS THE PROMISE TO DISCOVER
MY BIRTHRIGHT, BEAUTY AND LIGHT
(Flight of the Bumble Bee plays as LIMITATIONS does a frantic dance in which HE bounces off the screen each time HE tries to get through the screen)

KNOWLEDGE
(Beginning to open some of the pages from the book on the other side of the screen, so LIMITATIONS can see. CONTROL from THE TRIUMVIRATE steps up to KNOWLEDGE and tries to stop KNOWLEDGE from opening the pages in the book and showing his knowledge to LIMITATIONS. KNOWLEDGE pushes CONTROL away)
LET ME SHOW YOU WHAT I KNOW
LOOK AROUND
(LIMITATIONS looks behind himself)
TAKE A STEP BACK
(LIMITATIONS steps back from the glass pane)
THERE’S ROOM TO MOVE IF YOU BACKTRACK
ELIMINATE THE STRUGGLE
DON’T BE BOUND BY THIS PUZZLE
THE OPEN DOOR IS WORTHWHILE
(HE points to an open door behind LIMITATIONS)
GOING AGAINST THE PANE IS JUST FUTILE

LIMITATIONS
BUT I CAN SEE TO THE OTHER SIDE
DO YOU REALLY THINK IT’S MY PRIDE?
IT’S MY JOURNEY AND CLEAR AS DAY
NOT ILLUSIONS OR LACK OF THOUGHT I PRAY
THIS RESISTANCE IS ONLY CHILD’S PLAY
I’LL FIND THE OPEN GATEWAY
IT WON’T BE LONG, I’M NEVER WRONG
AND MY INNER CHILD STILL YOUNG AND STRONG
MAKES LOVE OF TRYING AN UNCONDITIONAL SONG
(Flight of the Bumble Bee plays as LIMITATIONS does another frantic dance, bouncing off the screen)

KNOWLEDGE
LET ME SHOW YOU WHAT I KNOW
LOOK AROUND
(LIMITATIONS looks behind himself)
TAKE A STEP BACK
(LIMITATIONS steps back from the glass pane)
THERE’S ROOM TO MOVE IF YOU BACKTRACK
(HE points to an open door behind LIMITATIONS)
ELIMINATE THE STRUGGLE
DON’T BE BOUND BY THIS PUZZLE
THE OPEN DOOR IS WORTHWHILE
GOING AGAINST THE PANE IS JUST FUTILE
(Flight of the Bumble Bee plays as LIMITATIONS does another frantic dance)

LIMITATIONS
THEN I ASK
I NEED NOT BASK
I JUST WANT HOME AND AN EASIER TASK
IT’S THE JOURNEY THAT GIVES THE ANSWERS
NOT THE SURROUNDING SHADOWS AND DANCERS
TRUST MY INTUITION
DURING THIS TRANSITION
MY DESTINATION
WAS ALWAYS SUPPOSITION
I SHOULD HAVE GIVEN IN
TO KNOWING AND ADMISSION
(Flight of the Bumble Bee plays as LIMITATIONS does another frantic dance and collapses to the floor exhausted)

AMANTIA / VOICE OF REASON
(To HUBRIS)
HMMM, THERE’S AN OLD STORY ABOUT A MAN WHO TOLD THE BUDDHA, I WANT HAPPINESS. THE BUDDHA REPLIED, ”FIRST REMOVE THE ‘I’, THAT’S EGO. THEN REMOVE ‘WANT’, THAT’S DESIRE. AND NOW ALL YOU’RE LEFT WITH IS HAPPINESS.” YOUR PERSONALITY SEEMS TO RUB PEOPLE THE WRONG WAY. IF YOU WANT TO HAVE FRIENDS AND PEOPLE AROUND YOU, YOU HAVE TO COME INTO FLOW WITH LIFE. OPEN UP AND LET LIFE FLOW THROUGH YOU. YOU ARE A PART OF LIFE, NOT SUPERIOR TO LIFE. DOES THAT HELP YOU?

(HUBRIS looks at GENUS DEI and AMANTIA / VOICE OF REASON in a thoughtful way, while absorbing what was said. HE gets up and begins his song Who Am I? done to music which reflects ABBA’s style. Music Video 3 enhances the song)

HUBRIS
I KEEP ASKING
WHO AM I?
I SEEM TO KNOW
I AM ALL SHOW
BUT DEEP INSIDE
I DO NOTHING BUT HIDE
MY FEELINGS AND EMOTION
FROM THIS ENDLESS OCEAN
WHAT’S THE SECRET TO FREEDOM
AND THE KEY TO THE GARDEN OF EDEN?

(HUBRIS, turning and looking at himself in a mirror)

I MUST ADMIT I HAVE AFFECTION FOR ME
I AM HANDSOME, RICH AND SO INTO ME
WHO NEEDS OTHERS WHEN I HAVE ME
GLORIOUS AND RESPLENDENT FOR ALL TO SEE
I KNOW I’M NOT GOD, BUT CLOSE ENOUGH FOR ME
OTHERS ARE SO ENVIOUS, THIS I CAN SEE
I’M PERFECT, BEAUTIFUL AND ALL FOR EFFECT

DANCERS AND SINGERS

IT’S ALL ABOUT ME
OH ME, OH MY, OH WOW
I AM RIFE WITH GOLD, AND NOT VERY OLD
IT’S ALL ABOUT ME AND MY LIFE

IT’S ALL ABOUT ME
OH ME, OH MY, OH WOW
I AM RIFE WITH GOLD, AND NOT VERY OLD
IT’S ALL ABOUT ME AND MY LIFE
(Sound of airplane engines)

HUBRIS
HAVE YOU SEEN ALL MY THINGS?
ALL GRAND AND THE SAME AS KINGS
MY PLANE HAS MASSIVE WINGS
AND MY HOME RESTS ABOVE NATURAL SPRINGS
JUST LOOK AT MY INCREDIBLE HAIR
MY BODY, GOOD LOOKS AND CLOTHES IF YOU DARE
DO YOU BLAME PEOPLE WHO LOVE MY FLARE?
I LOVE IT WHEN THEY CARE TO STARE

BUT WHY CAN’T I FACE MY INSIDE?
MAYBE I WON’T LIKE WHAT ABIDES
WILL I BE SHALLOW OR EVEN HOLLOW?
CAN I CURB MY EGO TIDES?
WILL I HATE MYSELF AND WALLOW?
SOMEONE SAVE ME FROM MY MISGUIDES
HELP ME WITH WHO DECIDES
I JUST WANT TO KNOW, WHO AM I?
(Pauses for a moment while looking at himself in the mirror again)
BUT THEN AGAIN, IN THE END, I JUST WANT ME

AND I AM SO OUT OF HERE

Middleman – The Agent Syndrome
June 15, 2011

It’s permeating our whole society. Everyone wants to make a fast buck on something that already exists. They want to be the agent that makes a commission for selling something that someone else makes.

China has become the second largest economy in the world. It won’t be long before they are number one. Why? Because they still produce products and will continue to produce products until they are number one. In contrary, we like the Romans have allowed others to do our work for us. We stand back as middlemen ready to re-sell something someone else has already made, or we expect to receive money for services that require no work. Take banks for example. They really aren’t interested in lending money, servicing your account or dealing with you at a counter, anymore. That costs too much. They can make more money, every time you swipe your credit card. without doing anything except to set-up the machinery to count the end game. How long do you think it will take banks to start charging for ‘free on-line banking’? Airlines record profits this last year from baggage fees and ticket changes are another example. Pharmaceutical companies are producing most of the medicines we use, outside of our borders. Look what happened with the swine flu epidemic a while back. We had to wait for some other country to produce the vaccine. It will all lead to us being held ransom some day. Oil companies and insurance companies are already holding us ransom. And, look at how we pay.

If you happen to believe that you buy your materials, you apply labor and create something, and then resell it to make a living from the difference, then you’re being left behind because the paradime has changed.  The trend is to stay away from labor. Producing something and earning your money is dead. We’ve given up the responsibility of work. We just want to make profit off something that is moving down the chain without putting in effort, skills, or even love. Our love has moved from making to taking.

There are very few things left we don’t outsource. They are usually things that must be made in the local physical location. However, if they happen to be labor intensive we outsource this because we can’t make enough money from the hard work. We hire hard workers for little pay.

There’s your work ethic… greed.

We have become a society of non-producers.

Heart and Soul
June 22, 2010

I’m watching video clips from Broadway shows at the video bar and I don’t know why. I’m thinking, they’ve never interested me before, but recently they’ve garnered my attention. Specifically, I’m paying a lot of attention to the talent that is expressed from the performers. I’m impressed with their complete devotion to their performing moment.  The performers next to the main attraction are just as engrossed with their performance. They have just as much talent, skill and are a star in their own right. Everyone is giving their ‘all’. Every ounce of their heart and soul is poured into their continuous moments of triumph. But why does the star performer get most of the recognition? It’s obvious that the other performers have put just as much heart and soul into their performance. Maybe even more. Rarely, in any other profession, is there so much appreciation given to someone as there is from Hollywood or a major sport. What defines recognition and appreciation for a job well done? Is it the size of the audience?

Why doesn’t it happen for the average person. Where is their recognition? Doesn’t most everyone put as much heart and soul into their daily performance at their work or in their daily life as a sports or celebrity performer? Does this mean that someone who is considered unsuccessful doesn’t put their heart and soul into being?

So what makes one performer or person stand out more than the next person? Why does it seem that only a few people can hold that ‘better than all the rest’ title?

I’m just wondering. The average person has heart and soul too.
